Description

This is a mobile outreach recovery support position that works with clients who struggle with substance abuse issues particularly those with opiate addictions. The worker collaborates and is guided by LWDH Mental Health & Addiction Social Workers. The Recovery Support Worker assists residents throughout the withdrawal stage and/or stabilization period and provides support services for the effective functioning of the facility.

 

This position must establish and maintain linkages with:

  • Other primary care organizations
  • Other LWDH organizational members/teams to facilitate client access to services and support
  • Elders, traditional healers and spiritual advisors to support the healing process for clients and provide advice to program staff
  • Catchment area resources and service providers to link clients with services

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Diploma in addictions or social services or appropriate combination of relevant education and life-work experiences. Lesser academic qualifications will be considered if they have completed CAMH Addiction courses (ie. Fundamentals of Addictions, Concurrent Disorder courses)
  • Current criminal/vulnerable persons record check
  • Current certification in CPR, First Aid, WHMIS, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) is an asset as a prerequisite, will be required to attain if not already certified
  • Valid G class driver’s license (with clean driver’s abstract) and use of own vehicle is required as well as ability to travel
  • Able to physically participate in providing clients services such as walking and some lifting (up to 30 lbs.)
  • Basic counselling and screening skills; ability to observe and record appropriately
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Knowledge of substance abuse issues and harm reduction approaches
  • Personal experience and/or understanding of Anishinabek culture, values, and healing practices
  • Demonstrated understanding of holistic health and well-being; personal experience and/or strong knowledge of the healing journey and abstinence of mind-altering chemicals
  • Good knowledge of available resources and experience working with at risk individuals and families is an asset
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (including computer skills); demonstrated interpersonal skills to deal effectively with a wide variety of people
  • Positive attitude and capacity to act as a healthy lifestyle role model
  • Ability to contribute to a positive work environment and a team culture
  • Comfortable working independently and as a team member
  • Demonstrated reliable attendance record
